WORK 011

Light + Dark

We want to express the understated beauty in the symmetry of the pitched roof and strong orthogonal line, facetiously likening it to a sun hat worn by farmers as a form of protection against the sun and rain. When viewed from a distance, the proportion between the bold roof against the sleeker, lighter ledges & canopy results in a nice contrast.

Light and dark, naturally opposing elements which is immediately apparent on the façade and also throughout the house, where a darker tone of materiality is used to define space, function and transitions. You start of the journey in a dark, compressed foyer and slowly transition through to the living, dining and kitchen which are lined with tall glass doors that allows plenty of daylight and garden views in, enlivening the main communal areas of the first storey.

Throughout the various spaces of the house, the rich, dark palette of the wood veneer helps to anchor certain spaces across the house, contrasting nicely against the white walls where the client’s personal collection of paintings can be hung and enjoyed. The culmination of the house features an open living space on the attic which is filled with plenty of daylight, allowing one to bask under the symmetry and balance of the pitched roof above while enjoying the views out from the rear terrace.
